Fun With Decoupage Part 3

On my day off I should be doing a million other things but I had the urge to do a little project.  I still had some nice paper hanging around from Paper Source.  Like their motto says "Do Something Creative Everyday" yeah right, I wish!

The kids were in the playroom taking break from the heat, I joined them and took out some supplies for a little decoupage project:

I still can't figure our how to evenly cover the bucket all in one piece.  I played around with cutting pieces of the papers, patched them together and this is what I came up with:

 Put it outside to dry...didn't take long in this heat. 

 

Decoupage Part Deux

For those of you that were asking what the hell is decoupage, here is a better definition:

decoupage  [dey-koo-pahzh] – French origin – the art or technique of decorating something with cut-outs of paper, linoleum, plastic or other flat material over which varnish or lacquer is applied.

Here is my second attempt at decoupage, this time it's with a galvanized bucket.

A few things I learned decoupaging the second time around:

1.  That unless I want to get interuppted 57 times this is something I can only do when the kids are at school or asleep!  Mom, what are you doing?  Mom can I help? Mum, I'm thirsty...Mom look what I did...Mom where is my paint...mom, mumma, mum!  LOL.

2.  I discovered that there are a number of different Mod Podges!  My favorite so far is the "Outdoor" Mod Podge.  It is really thick, glossy and bonds well.  The "Gloss" Mod Podge was good for overall coverage at the end of the project to give it an extra shine.

3.  Don't use Mod Podge the day after getting a manicure :( 

I moved production down to the play room, thinking everyone would stay in the same place.  Sean was the only one that complied...Nolan had other ideas.



I was going to completely cover the entire thing with decorative paper but found it to be much too advanced for my current decoupaging skill level.  So I added some strips and shapes.  Here are some tips/pictures on how I did this (again, I am not so good with the step by step)

I painted the "Outdoor" Mod Podge on the bucket and on the back of the paper.  After sticking it on I painted more "Outdoor" Mod Podge all over it.  And then some "gloss" Mod Podge.  I went a little Mod Podge crazy!

I took it outside to dry in the lovely sun.

 I also decoupaged a little gift tag...

I used the decoupaged bucket for a "his & her fabulous hair" gift package we donated to a fundraiser.  It was filled with "Moroccan Oil" Hair Products for her and "Towel Dry" products for him along with a gift certificate to Lessard's Barbershop (my husband's barbershop). 




Nolan wanted to add his own bow...

The fundrasier was for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  A friend from high school, Jimmy Stone, is running the Boston Marathon to raise money for Dana-Farber.  Jimmy's wife has been battling cancer this past year and is now in remission.  A great gift, a great night, for a great cause.

For the love of paper!

So last night I was able to sneak out ALL BY MYSELF!!  I decided I wasn't going to waste my freedom on going food shopping or running other necessary errands.  I headed over to Legacy Place in Dedham to one of my absolute favorite stores, Paper Source.  After spending over an hour perusing all the fabulousness, here is what I ended up with:

earlier in the day I was at the craft store A.C. Moore with the boys (yes, we made a scene, lol) I got some lovely ribbon...

Not exactly sure what I am going to do with it all...hoping for greatness.

I may try my hand at decoupage!

And we have some preliminary results:

I made these for Nolan and Sean's bedroom to go along with their pirate theme.  Arrrrrrrgh!

I wish I could give step by step instructions, but I was a bit of a mess.  I can give some tips.

Here are my supplies:

Flip the paper over and trace the letter leaving an extra 1/2 an inch...

(do you like my tracing tool, couldn't find a pencil!)

I was going to use this

But I couldn't get the jar open and my husband wasn't home, so I used Mod Podge

 I painted the Mod Podge on the letter and on the paper.

anywhere there was any kind of curve I cut slits.  For the "S" I basically cut fringe all around in.  Once you do this on both sides and you glue it on you can cover your "fringe" marks with strips of paper.

 

I did one side at a time, letting each side dry before I did the other.  When I finished each side I completely covered it with Mod Podge and then left it dry before continuing.  I wish I got the glossy one, the one I bought was matte.  Anyway, I covered up any "fringe" marks or blanks spots with strips.
